Atelier d'images - Sven Becker

#Occupygezi

On my own initiative, I decided to go to Istanbul in June 2013 to dive into the diverse movements of resistance at that period in Turkey. I made a series of documentary photos showing personal testimonies of people which participated in demonstrations for very diverse reasons on both sides of the conflicts. I tried to capture the different emotions people were having in very different situations. You can read the strength, the despair but also the tiredness, hate, love and faith on their faces.

The trigger was an e-mail received in the end of May, 2013 of a friend living in Istanbul which described the situation of the Gezi Park. He explained that a big movement had established itself to guarantee the survival of the park and that law enforcement became more and more present and even violent. The media did not talk about it much at that time. It intrigued me and I decided to go on site to see my own eyes what really took place.
